KARACHI (Dunya News) – The Sindh Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the federal government to abolish the petroleum levy, with the provincial government clarifying that the matter falls under the federal government’s authority.
The Sindh Assembly session was chaired by Speaker Awais Qadir Shah. Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Muhammad Farooq presented the resolution seeking an end to the petroleum levy, which was subsequently approved by the house.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar said the levy was a federal matter and that the Sindh government could not abolish it on its own. He said the provincial government could, however, approach the federal government with a request to end the levy.
The resolution formally called on the federal government to abolish the petroleum levy, and the Sindh Assembly approved the demand.
The development comes amid renewed discussions between the federal government and Jamaat-e-Islami over relief from the petroleum levy. The government and JI had recently agreed to form separate expert committees to examine measures for reducing the levy and providing relief to consumers.
